Our Story

How a love of mid-century aesthetics became a working wardrobe solution

The Problem With Vintage Clothing Is Vintage Clothing

There is a particular frustration familiar to anyone who has fallen in love with mid-century American fashion and then tried to actually wear it. Original vintage garments are objects of history as much as clothing — they were made for different bodies, in different fabrics, for a different pace of life. The sizing is inconsistent. The fabrics are often fragile. The zippers stick. The waistbands don't move.

The aesthetic, however, is genuinely compelling. The silhouettes of the 1940s through 1970s represent a period in American fashion when garments were designed with clear intention — when a dress was expected to have a defined waist, a considered collar, a hem at a specific and deliberate length. That level of design thinking didn't disappear; it just became harder to find in contemporary fashion.

Decade Dress began as an attempt to resolve this tension: to take the silhouette grammar of mid-century American fashion and translate it into garments that function in a modern life. Not costumes. Not replicas in the strict sense. Reproductions — faithful to the visual language of each decade, updated in the materials that make them actually wearable.

Our Approach

01

Archival Accuracy

Each design in our collection is developed from specific archival references — photographs, pattern books, and period fashion documentation. We work to understand not just what a garment looked like but why it was constructed the way it was, and what details defined its era.

02

Modern Wearability

We make deliberate choices about where to adapt and where to remain faithful. Hidden stretch panels, modern zippers, and breathable fabric blends are incorporated where they improve the wearing experience without compromising the visual accuracy of the design.

03

Considered Sizing

Vintage silhouettes often assume specific proportions that don't map to contemporary sizing conventions. We provide detailed measurements for every garment and offer guidance on how to measure for vintage-inspired fits so you can find what works for your body.

04

Print Authenticity

The prints of each decade are as defining as the silhouettes. We develop prints from archival references and produce them on modern fabrics, maintaining the visual character of each era while achieving the color accuracy and durability that contemporary printing allows.
